One of the Chevy dealers called me the other day trying to get me to buy a car. Chevy is running a 0% for 72 months finance deal, so I thought I might try to get a steal of a deal on a Camaro. Jay Lauer came with me too.

(not pictured)

Long story short, they had a 2015 1SS for $36k, and I figured if I could get a really unrealistic trade in value on the Sonic and the Camaro for $30k I could make it work.

After spending an inordinate amount of time going back and forth with the sales manager they unsurprisingly couldn’t get me what I wanted. I expected that, but figured it was worth testing to see how desperately they wanted to get rid of a 2015. No new Camaro for me. In hindsight, that was for the best.]

We went to the Ford dealer next because I wanted to try and get a test drive in the new Mustang, both GT and Ecoboost.

I really liked them. The GT I expected to like, but the Ecoboost? I liked it a lot more than I expected.

Kinja'd!!!

Back to back with the GT it certainly wasn’t fast, but unlike my Sonic it actually has plenty of torque down low. It’s no slouch overall, and it’s really comfortable to drive. I’m a fan.

Now I’m very curious in the turbo Camaro, and definitely want to wait for it to show up to test it against the Ecoboost Mustang. I think one of these might be in my future...

Until Ford can prove that they’ve fixed the corrosion issue on the 2015+ models, I will never even consider another Mustang, or any other Ford product with aluminum body panels.

What? Corrosion? Honestly never seen a corrosion problem on a mustang. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I haven’t seen any recall issues or statements made abut it. got any info on this?

Huh? What corrosion issues?

The aluminum hoods and trunk lids on all models from 2005 and up suffer from galvanic corrosion due to improper paint prep at the factory. The aluminum sheet gets contaminated with iron particles from the stamping die, over time, the chemical reaction between the two metals causes corrosion that eventually blisters the paint and causes it to flake off. It starts either at the weld seams underneath, or on top at the leading edge.

Ford refuses to repair any vehicles after their 3 year/36,000 mile comprehensive warranty, even if they’re still within their 5 year/unlimited mile corrosion warranty because its only surface rust and not perforation (the aluminum panels won’t ever perforate, no matter how badly corroded).

Sometimes it shows up within a year of production, sometimes 3 years. Not every Mustang gets it, of course, but it is a very common problem and was the subject of a class action lawsuit that was thrown out for procedural issues.

Stripping and repainting the hood (Ford’s preferred repair) seems to result in the problem reappearing after 2-3 years or so, and replacing the hood is a crapshoot, since the new one can easily have the same contamination issue.

The older Explorers and Expeditions with aluminum hoods have the same problem, too. Ford is a bit more generous with them, often offering to cover 50% of the repair cost out of warranty, something they generally don’t do for Mustangs, presumably because the number of affected Mustangs is far greater.

Kind of makes me wonder what’s going to happen with those all-aluminum F-150s, if Ford can’t figure out how to properly stamp a simple hood after more than decade.

I don’t believe there ever was one, but the problem’s been going on for over 10 years now. Ford just fixes the cars that are within their comprehensive warranty, and tells everyone else to f-off. Its a galvanic corrosion issue with the aluminum trunk lids and hoods, not every Mustang gets it, but its a very common problem - much more than you would expect for a modern car.

Google “galvanic corrosion” and “Mustang”, you’ll see it. Explorers and Expeditions have had the same problem with their aluminum hoods, too.

The galvanic corrosion on the hoods and trunk lids, because Ford still doesn’t know how to properly clean and prep aluminum panels.

Absolutely freaky. Good thing to know when I look for a car again in a few years. Thanks.

When I bought my 2013, an older guy with a 2007 came up to me at a car wash, literally the first week with the car, and warned me about the problem and told me his car had been repainted 3 times and it was back again.

I didn’t really take him seriously, but last year, it started happening to the welds under my trunk lid. It isn’t in a visible spot, so I sanded down the problem area, cleaned it, treated it, and painted it with a rust proofing primer. A few weeks ago, I noticed a few bubbles at the leading edge of the hood. The car is out of the 3/36 warranty but still within corrosion, however, the dealer says not to get my hopes up on it, since they deal with it all the time and Ford rarely comes through other than for Explorers and Expeditions. Its an $800 fix, I’m going to do it and trade the car in ASAP.

Ah the aluminum paint prep fiasco. See them on expeditions a lot, not so much their hoods but the rear tail gate. Never seen one on a mustang. And yeah, rust claims have to perforate through, which with aluminum won’t happen. Hopefully considering the f150 is all aluminum now they finally decided to fix the issue. If not, my job is about to get more annoying. Hate body shop warranty claims. The whole process involves submitting pictures to ford and it’s just annoying.

That’s crazy. I’m glad I had nothing like that on my 2000 or my 2002. I switched up into stealth Mercedes (Crossfire) land after my 2002 was wrecked so the only issues I’ve had to deal with have been electrical. Something I’ll keep in mind when I move past the Crossfire.

This scares me, especially being in the rust belt...I’m gonna check the 6th gen forums to see if there’s any info on the 2015+ cars with this issue. I never consider rust-prone cars. ;_;

Great....You’ve now scared me about my favorite pony car. I’ve been looking up more info on this problem and holy geez, it’s real, and even on the trunk lid too on S197s!! I don’t like this one bit. ;_;

Don’t all s197 mistangs have aluminum hoods? My 2006 is aluminium. The only problem I know of is the shaking at high speeds thats why they all got hood vents in 2012. I’ve heard of the explorer issue but not on the stang. Edit nm I see this is a big problem on all s197 mustangs and I’ve just been lucky.

Yes, 2005-14 are aluminum hoods, 2015+ are aluminum hoods and fenders. All years appear to have the corrosion issue, with the exception of 15/16, haven’t heard anything on them yet. Could be that they’re still too new for it to become visible, or maybe its finally fixed.

Had the problem with my 2003 Explorer. I bought it new from a good dealer who, during an oil change, spotted the bubbling paint on the front edge of the aluminum hood before I ever would have, and under warranty, they replaced the hood. That was my last positive ownership experience with that car. Rear glass hinge fractured and Ford refused to pay despite a recall because they said my truck was built six weeks after they had solved the problem of bad hinges. After three wheel bearing failures and a whining rear axle with less than 60K on the vehicle, I traded it in.

I know, right? My ‘13's going into the shop next week to have the hood stripped and painted. Bubbles showed up at about 3 years, 4 months.
